Koh Mak & Koh Kood
It is worth spending a few more hours away from the bustling island of Koh Chang to submerge yourself in a truly serene atmosphere, that feels like your own private world.
Koh Mak and Koh Kood are located off the east coast of Koh Chang, and are easily accessible by speedboat or slow boat. If your goal is to dive into the sea and be instantly surrounded with an eye-catching underwater world, you can choose to stay at any of many resorts, choosing your favourite style on either, or both islands, because diving and snorkelling spots are very easy reached from either of these two islands.
Certainly, Koh Kood, the bigger of the two, offers more of a range of accommodation and activities. Yet Koh Mak has a charm that will make you feel as if you are a pioneer, delving into pure unspoilt nature and a local way of life.
A small road leading away from the main pier of Koh Mak will take you through coconut plantations to the resort area, with various kinds of accommodation available from internationally high standards to cheap and cheerful for backpackers. Although they are very different in rates and service, most of those resorts are located next to a long private beach with panoramic views and serene sunsets, or sunrises for all you ‘early birds’.
The best activity on Koh Mak is to do nothing, lying on the soft beaches with only an occasional tourists, reading, swimming, eating, and then sleeping some more. That’s really the best way to stay here! However if you’re unable stop your hyperactive side, then you may rent a bicycle or a motorbike and ride it around the island. But be careful on the roads, the condition is usually rustic, and most of them are still unpaved.
If you have a huge desire for activities, Koh Kood is your solution. Because of the larger size, Koh Kood can offer tourists more options for active fun – various water activities, trekking, waterfall tours, or kayaking. Koh Kood also has many white sandy beaches around the island, surrounded with emerald-clear seawater. Hence, it is sometimes called “The Andaman of the East.”
You don’t have to worry about accommodation on Koh Kood, as you can choose from a large array of resorts which are located all around the island, allowing you to choose one that is a perfect fit to your own style. Most of resorts on Koh Kood offer tourists a 3-day-2-night package to visit the island without toil. The package includes speedboat transportation from the mainland, accommodation, meals, and some short excursions.
When buying a package to Koh Kood, don’t forget to make a deal for the inclusion of a trip to Klong Chao Waterfall. This is a ‘must see’ jewel of the island; you really shouldn’t pass up the opportunity of visiting a magnificent curtain of water falling from an abundant tropical rainforest, down into a crystal clear natural pool. Furthermore, we recommend you spend your evening before dinner taking a kayak along the mangrove forest, which looks amazing when viewed from the water, but just be careful not to drop your camera.
If you would like to see how the underwater world of the eastern coast of Thailand looks, ask your resort to organise a speedboat to take you out to Koh Kra or Koh Rang for some snorkelling.
But if you think that you and a peaceful beach shouldn’t be separated, you may choose to stay still, gazing out towards to the horizon, looking far beyond the sea. Nobody will blame you for treasuring your relaxation time.

It was once visited by King Mongkut (Rama VI) and was given the royal name “Anamkok Waterfall” in commemoration/remembrance of Ong Chiang Sue, a Vietnamese king taking refuge in the Kingdom of Thailand during the reign of King Rama I in the late 18th century.
